    How to Get Your SIN

Your Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a 9-digit number required to work in Canada and access government programs.

    Cost: Free

    Time: ~20 minutes

    1

    Gather Documents

You'll need your passport and work permit, study permit, or permanent residence card.

    2

    Visit Service Canada

Find your nearest Service Canada office. No appointment needed in most locations.

    3

    Complete Application

Fill out form NAS 2120. Staff can help if you have questions.

    4

    Receive Your SIN

Your 9-digit SIN is printed on a letter. Store it securely—never carry it in your wallet.

Important: Never share your SIN unnecessarily. Employers, banks, and government agencies may need it, but most other businesses do not.
