What this site is
WhatIsCredit.ca is an independent Canadian publication that explains credit and debt in plain language. It is for education only. It is not financial, legal, tax or credit advice. It is not affiliated with any government body, credit bureau or lender.
Where our facts come from
We use primary sources first: the issuer's own pages and agreements, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy, the Canada Revenue Agency, the Bank of Canada, the credit bureaus, and the text of the law. We use news reports only to confirm that an event happened. Where a page states a figure, we link the source and show the date we checked it. When a company does not say something, we say that it does not say it. We do not fill gaps with guesses.
How we check
Figures are checked against their sources before publishing. Card figures are re-checked at least once a month, and each shows the date of its last check. Guides show the date they were last reviewed. When sources disagree, we show both and say which one is the primary source.
Corrections
If you find an error, email hello@whatiscredit.ca. We review reported errors promptly, correct them, and note significant corrections on the page with the date.
Independence and money
We have no paid partnerships today. If that changes, we'll say so on every affiliated page. Lists and comparisons follow stated criteria, not payments. Companies do not control what we write.
How we use AI
We use AI tools to help research and draft. Figures are checked against their sources before they are published.
What we do not do
We do not make predictions or forecasts. We do not give personal financial advice. We never ask for your SIN, account numbers or passwords. We do not promise any change to a credit score or any approval.
