Your SIN is a 9-digit number required for working in Canada, opening bank accounts, and filing taxes. It's your first essential document.
Why It Matters
Without a SIN, you cannot legally work in Canada. Banks also require it to open most types of accounts and to report interest income to the CRA.
How To Do It
- 1Apply in person at a Service Canada office (fastest—often same-day)
- 2Bring your passport and immigration documents (work permit, study permit, or PR card)
- 3The SIN is free—there's no fee to apply
- 4You'll receive a paper confirmation (SIN cards are no longer issued)
Tips
- •Memorize your SIN—never carry the paper copy with you
- •Never share your SIN unless legally required (employer, bank, CRA)
- •Your SIN is yours for life—it doesn't expire
